Emotional Intelligence

A recurring principle I've heard from both CEOs and General Officers is that people more often reach their peak, based on limits of emotional intelligence, not based on limits of competence.  Emotional intelligence largely refers to "People Skills"; our ability to lead, communicate, and interact with others while providing for emotional stability and mutual understanding.  Admittedly, when I started working in the Army as a Platoon Leader and Staff Officer, I realized that I had significantly underestimated the importance of Emotional Intelligence when I studied it in Psychology.

There are five components:

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Regulation
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social Skills
